A new undergraduate management regulation atone of China's top universities has sparked anationwide debate on the future of the country'shigher education system.

近日，中国一所名校公布的对本科生的最新管理规定，在全国引发了一场对中国高等教育系统的未来的大讨论。

Huazhong University of Science and Technology incentral Hubei Province says undergraduate studentswho perform poorly will not be able to continue theirbachelor courses, but will instead only be able toachieve an associate degree.

位于湖北省的华中科技大学日前出台的一项新规称，本科学生成绩未达标者将不能继续学士课程，只能获得专科学位。

Many Internet users think it is unacceptable not to be given a bachelor's degree after fiercecompetition in the earlier college entrance examination.

而许多网民则认为，经过激烈的高考竞争考入大学之后，却不能获得学士学位，这是不可接受的。

However, the university responded that the new measures respect students with different levelsof potential.

但是该校则回应称，这一新措施考虑了具有不同层次潜力的学生。

"The system offers a certain degree of flexibility in the current education model. Studentswho don't get enough credits will be given another opportunity to continue their studies, rather than simply drop out of school," the university said in an online statement.

该校在网络上的一份声明中称：“这一系统在目前的教育模式中提供了一定程度的灵活性。没有获得足够学分的学生将获得另一个继续学业的机会，而不是就此辍学。”

And Huazhong's justification has gained a lot of support on social media platform, Weibo.

而在微博上，许多人都对华中科技大学的理由表示大力支持。

User @Haishijiaowohuizhangdarenba said, "For those who face dropout, it is a good choice."

网友“Haishijiaowohuizhangdarenba”表示：“对于那些面临辍学的人来说，这是一个不错的选择。”

"The new measures will not affect those who study hard at all. For the slackers, it is better forthem to learn the lesson at school than after graduation. It should be encouraged in otheruniversities as well," posted @Chitushaonvyaolianle.

网友“Chitushaonvyaolianle”说道：“这些新措施对那些努力学习的人一点儿影响也没有。而对于懒惰的人来说，在学校里学到这一课比到了社会上再吃亏要好得多。其他高校也应该施行这一政策。”

While @Liangleibadao said, "The regulation was adopted at Tsinghua University more than adecade ago. It is nothing new. The requirement is not that harsh at the end of day."

网友“Liangleibada”也说道：“清华十多年前就实行这一规定了。这不是什么新鲜事儿。事实上要求并没有那么严格。”
