A-Level考试写作里面的连词

首先，来看看常用的连接词组、短语及相邻句子的连接词在A-Level文章中的用法，这些表达特殊意义的语言成分可以是单词，也可以是短语。

举个例子，看看如何用连词将下面两个论断组合起来：

1. Squares arenon-negative numbers.

平方是非负数。

2. Absolute values are non-negativenumbers.

绝对值是非负数。

and（不强调其中任何一方）

Squares and absolute values are non-negativenumbers.

both（与and类似）

Bothsquares and absolute values are non-negative numbers.

also（稍微强调前者）

Squares, and also absolute values, are non-negativenumber.

Squares are non-negativenumbers, as also are absolute values.

as well as（与also类似）

Squares, as well as absolute values, arenon-negative numbers.

not only ... but also（强调有多于一个可能性）

Not only squares butalso absolute values are non-negative numbers.

apart from/in addition to（强调多于一种方法；比用also稍微更强调平方，但比用not only ... but also强调弱些）

Apart from (In additionto) squares, absolute values are non-negative numbers.

moreover/furthermore（着重在moreover/furthermore后面的叙述）

Squares and absolutevalues are two of the commonest non-negative numbers. Moreover (Furthermore),principal square roots are well known.

接着，来看看隐含或解释（Implications or Explanations），简单的说就是因果关系。像数学这种逻辑性超强的学科，关是because 和 so是不够用的。

先看看这两个例子：

1. The gradient of astraight line is positive.

直线的斜率是正数。

2. The straight line isincreasing.

直线是上升的。

as/because/since（最常见的用法）

As(Because, Since) the gradient of a straight line is positive, this line isincreasing.

due to（比用as更强调）

The straight line isincreasing due to its positivegradient.

in view of/owing to/on account of（比用as更强调）

In view of (Owing to,On account of) positive gradient of astraight line, it is increasing.

given（所述条件不可避免的结果）

Given positive gradient of a straight line, it is increasing.

it follows that（对原因给出比用as更多的强调）

The gradient of astraight line is positive. It followsthat this line is increasing.

consequently/therefore/thus（强调性居于as和it follows that之间。Consequently和therefore在句子开头比thus更合适）

The gradient of astraight line is positive and consequently(therefore, thus) this line is increasing.

当一页纸里有过多的because，便会使文章读起来很严(wu)肃(liao)。所以需要学会合理的应用as，due to，it follows that等连接词或短语。

同样的情况也出现在therefore和hence的运用中。我们也可以使用不同的说法，如consequently和it follows from ... that，以免重复。另外，because后面跟的是从句，若只跟名词或动名词，则用because of。

再接着，是转折连词。这类词通常起的是修正和限制（Modifications and Restrictions）的作用。

1. Using the formulais widely applied for solving quadratic equations.

公式法可以广泛用于求解二次方程。

2. For quadraticequations with a ‘good form’, completing the square is preferred.

对某些形式整齐的二次方程，应优先使用配平方法。

alternatively（直接转折）

When solving generalquadratic equations, using the formula can be applied. Alternatively, if quadratic equations have a ‘good form’,completing the square is preferred.

although （比alternatively更强调配平方法）

Although using the formula is widely applied for solvingquadratic equations, completing the square is preferred when equations have a‘good form’.

though （Though比although弱，且多用于句中，而不是句首。此例子中though可被although替代，以更强调配平方法）

Using the formula iswidely applied for solving quadratic equations, though completing the square is preferred when equations have a‘good form’.

but （与though类似）

If quadraticequations have general forms, using the formula can be applied, but if they have a ‘good form’,completing the square is preferred.

whereas （常见但不被经常使用）

Using the formula isapplied for solving general quadratic equations, whereas completing the square is preferred for solving equationswith a ‘good form’.

by contrast（使用转折词组的首选）

Using the formula iswidely applied for solving quadratic equations. By contrast, for quadratic equations with a ‘good form’, completingthe square is preferred.

最后，是并列连词。

except （明显给予的局限或限制）

Except for quadraticequations with a ‘good form’, for which completing the square is preferred,using the formula is widely applied for general form.

however/on the other hand （注意however和on the other hand不总是可以互换。On the other hand仅当有两种可能性时可用，就像我们有两只手一样。这个例子与although和though相似，但它仅仅连接两个叙述。）

Using the formula iswidely applied for solving quadratic equations. However (on the other hand),for equations with a ‘good form’, completing the square is preferred.

nevertheless （即使第一句为真，第二句也为真。前一例如用nevertheless取代however则不对，虽然这两个词有时可互换。）

Using the formula ismuch more general than completing the square for solving quadratic equations. Nevertheless,there is great demand for the method of completing the square.

despite/in spite of （强调主观的观点）

Despite (In spite of)completing the square which is simple for solving quadratic equations, Dr Suprefers to use the formula.

instead of/rather than （Rather than和instead of一般而言可以互换，但它们意思不同：rather than隐含一个清晰之选，而instead of仅仅叙述一个选择。）

For quadraticequations with a ‘good form’, we use method of completing the square instead of(rather than) using the formula.
